What is HMPV virus?

HMPV, or Human Metapneumovirus, is a virus that causes respiratory infections in humans. It is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, which also includes viruses like the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). HMPV was first identified in 2001, and it primarily affects the respiratory tract, leading to conditions like colds, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia, particularly in young children, elderly adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

The symptoms of HMPV infection can resemble those of other respiratory viruses and may include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing

In some cases, especially among vulnerable populations, the infection can lead to more severe respiratory issues.

HMPV is typically spread through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, and it can be contracted by close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.

There's no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, so management generally involves supportive care, such as fluids, fever reducers, and rest, while more severe cases might require hospitalization.
